The FDIM 2010 QRP
Challenge
Need a challenge ?
Can you design and build a ham transceiver with 72 (or fewer) components !
Each year at FDIM attendees have the
opportunity to bring their latest projects and enter them into the "Building
Contest". There are six categories that
are judged by the people attending the Friday night event. Next year we will add a special category called
the FDIM 2010 QRP Challenge.
Normally we do not make FDIM announcements until January, but we thought
that the extra time gained by announcing this in December would help the
participants. So put on your thinking
caps and heat up the irons. Let's see
what can be done with this challenge!
The objective is as follows:
Design and build a
QRP Transceiver using the following rules:
- The transceiver is limited to a
maximum of 72 parts.
- The receiver must be a superhet or
other "single signal receiver".
- Keying and muting must be included.
- Covers at least one of the
standard QRP Frequencies
- Capable of battery power for
portable use.
- Schematic w/parts list and
functional XCVR be brought (or sent) to FDIM 2010 (13-16 May 2010).
- Only one part may be an IC, all other parts must be discrete components.
- Knobs, sockets, tuning dials, copper board, power source and enclosures are not considered parts.

One of the things that QRP ARCI does in an effort to keep members informed on the status of their subscription to the QRP Quarterly, is send out renewal notices via email. These notices are sent quarterly to members whose subscription has expired in the recent past, as well as those whose subscription expired with receipt of the latest QQ.
We sent a notice out last on December 7, 2009 to those whose subscription expired with receipt of the Fall 2009 QQ as well as some that expired in the recent past. Unfortunately, notices were sent in error to members with expiration dates in 2010 and later!
I have received a number of emails from people that received the notice in error, and have responded to them with their expiration date. If you received this notice and think it is wrong, you can check your member status by using the Member Lookup
This information is from data received on November 15, 2009. We try to update the records on the 15th of each month, so if you have renewed since mid November, your new info may not be available until mid December.
We have used this process for 2 years and this is the first major problem. Part of the problem this time was that we were a bit late with our renewal notices, and some bad data crept into the member database. We know what caused it, so we will do better next time.
I apologize for the confusion.
72,
Ken Evans, W4DU
President - QRP ARCI

At FDIM 2009 Dick Pascoe G0BPS announced his intention to step down as QRP ARCI President on 1 July 2009. He is succeeded by Ken Evans W4DU who has served as Vice-President for several years. Kathy Bromley WQ5T (a familiar face at FDIM) has joined the management team as Vice-President.
Here is an edited version of Ken's From The President column - the full version will appear in the upcoming Summer 2009 issue of QRP Quarterly -
"There is an old saying that all good things must come to an end. So it is with the tenure of Dick Pascoe, G0BPS as president of QRP ARCI. It has been my privilege to serve as the club vice president with Dick over the past five years. These past years have seen the club's active membership move from 1800 to approximately 2400. We have built very close relationships with the
GQRP Club that helped provide assistance to hams in other countries. The QRP ARCI presence at ham fests has increased and as a result, more people are aware of and involved in QRP. FDIM has consistently improved each year and has become world renown as a premier QRP event. Over the next three years, I will endeavor as your president to continue to move the image of QRP as a
positive force in amateur radio. I offer my thanks to Dick for a job extremely well done. You will be missed.
When Dick informed me that the board of directors had elected me to the presidency (effective July 1,2009), he also told me that they wanted a recommendation from me as to whom I
would recommend to serve as vice president. I am pleased to inform you that the board elected Kathy Bromley, WQ5T to serve as your vice president for the next three years. Kathy lives in Ft Smith, AR with husband Jay, W5JAY. She holds an extra class license and has worked a bit of DX on twenty meters. Kathy is a tireless worker that has helped immensely with the past three
FDIM events. She brings excellent administrative skills to the office that will be used to help with budgetary, financial and organizational issues as we move the club forward. She will be a great deal of help to me and an asset to the club over the next three years."
